Be familiar with common scams such as emails from a bank or retail store, including Amazon for example claiming there are issues with an account. Always contact the bank or service provider directly if you have questions about the communication you received. Never use the telephone number provided in the email, phone or text message you received.
Elder abuse takes various forms, including physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse, as well as neglect. Each form poses a serious threat to our seniors.
Florida is known as a particular hotbed of exploitation and abuse of seniors. Some of the risk factors include:

cognitive decline

dependency on caregivers
Learn to recognize the signs of elder abuse
Be cognizant of any physical and behavioral changes such as:

unexplained injuries

sudden weight loss
-
changes in mood
-
withdrawal from social activities
These can be signs of physical, emotional, or social abuse.
Also keep an eye out for sudden changes in financial status including:

unauthorized transactions

the manipulation of legal documents
Financial exploitation is a prevalent issue that may go unnoticed. Perhaps create a personal relationship with your banker or at your loved one’s branch. These professionals are alert to common signs of financial exploitation.
One of the most common issues to be aware of is “self-neglect”. These include:

signs of poor hygiene/ wearing soiled clothing

changes in their lifestyle such as hoarding, placing items requiring refrigeration in cabinets, or finding used dishes in unusual locations around the home

untreated medical conditions

or a lack of necessities
Neglect can lead to severe health complications.
