According to the National Institutes of Health and National Institute on Aging, long-distance caregiving brings unique kinds of stress. Caregivers who live far away may feel guilty about not being closer, not doing enough, or not having enough time with their loved one. They may even feel jealous of those who live closer and can do more. Adding to the stress of distance, may be resentment from or toward family and caregivers who do live nearby your loved one and may need respite.

Many long-distance caregivers worry about the cost of caregiving - taking time off from work, being away from family, and paying for travel. Even if you do not have the same stressors as a primary caregiver, long-distance caregivers should be aware of when they may need help, too.

Caregivers in general are known to tend to have a higher risk of physical and mental health issues, sleep problems, and chronic conditions such as high blood pressure. Caregivers are even at an increased risk of premature death.
