November 2014 Newsletter
As the year winds down, we gather our families and friends together, often over a delicious meal. But there are many people in our community who have no place to celebrate or no food to prepare. So while you clean house, make shopping lists and prepare for your celebrations, consider those less fortunate. Volunteer at a local food pantry, help serve a meal to the homeless, make a donation to your favorite charity that supports the poor and lonely. Know that you can make an impact, and give thanks for what you have!
November 9th -15th is Hunger &
Homelessness Awareness Week
How We Help
Every day counts at MonarchCare, but Halloween is a favorite day for our younger clients. Meet Byron, a bright young man who lives with cerebral palsy. At Byron’s request, our care manager Scott arranged for a Halloween party to take place at Byron’s daycare program, using Byron’s own money (saved from his Medicaid personal needs allotment.) Everyone had a wonderful time dressing up for the party. It’s not just about feeding the body, but also feeding the spirit. Just ask Byron, he knows!

How You Help
Thank you to everyone who helped us with our 2 for 1 Challenge Grant! We raised $2000 to earn a matching $1000 from an anonymous donor. These funds will be used to support our Information and Referral to those in need and ongoing services for the indigent.

Did You Know?
Fifty million Americans – one in five are children - go to bed and wake up hungry. Across the United States, the number of families and individuals who are food insecure has remained constant or grown for many years.  This number has risen dramatically since the economic crisis of 2008. The principle causes of food insecurity in the United States are:
  • Unemployment
  • High housing costs
  • Low wages and poverty
  • Lack of access to SNAP (food stamps)
  • Medical or health costs

Upcoming Events
On December 2nd look for our
e-mail asking for your support on #Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to giving back in our nation.  In November we have a day for giving thanks (and eating turkey) followed by Black Friday sales and Cyber Monday, both focused on shopping.  Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a day charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give. Please consider MonarchCare for your Tuesday Giving!

Then stop by our office on either December 3rd, 4th or 5th to pick an item off our Giving Tree. We have been hosting the Giving Tree for a few years now and it has made a BIG difference in the lives of our indigent clients, as most of them have no one to remember them during the giving season. Your commitment to provide a personalized gift for one of these clients will make you feel GREAT. And while you are here, visit with MonarchCare staff, have a homemade treat and raise a glass of bubbly to celebrate our friendship!

It’s hard to believe but MonarchCare’s 10th Annual Transforming Lives Luncheon is just around the corner. Our Save the Date cards and emails will be out soon with the names of our honorees. If you would like to join our Task Force please contact Knyvett Lee at Klee@MonarchCare.org. We are happy to announce that our Chair this year is one of our Board Members, Kirphton Fray. We hope you will join us for this wonderful event in the spring of 2015.
