June 2016 Newsletter

alt textalt text June is a month we celebrate Fathers, Flags, African-American music and the start of summer. So pop open the champagne, put your favorite Hip Hop/Motown/Blues/Rap/Jazz artist on the stereo, dance around with Dad and have a great summer!

How We Help
alt textMonarchCare is proud to wish our client Ruth L. a very happy 100th birthday! Ruth celebrated last month at her home. Neighbors, caregivers and a few friends joined Ruth for the celebration that included food, balloons, and of course a birthday cake, which Ruth enjoyed very much. Ruth has been a MonarchCare client for many years (and a past newsletter success story.) Thanks to the great care of her caregivers and the assistance of the MonarchCare team, Ruth has been able to reside in her own home. We hope to celebrate more birthdays to come!

Did You Know?
June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Sadly, MonarchCare is very familiar with elder abuse. Over the years we have rescued vulnerable individuals from abusive environments, recovered clients’ life savings from financial exploitation and reconnected self-neglecting persons with long lost family and friends. Every year an estimated 5 million older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation, but experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as 23 cases go unreported.

Ways to Alleviate Elder Abuse
  • Call or visit an elder and ask how s/he is doing.
  • Provide a respite break for a caregiver.
  • Ask your bank manager to train tellers on how to detect elder financial abuse.
  • Doctors can ask all senior patients about possible neglect/violence in their lives.
  • Volunteer to be a friendly visitor to a nursing home resident or to a homebound senior in your neighborhood.
Red Flags in an Elder’s Finances
  • Bills that seem to high or that the elder cannot explain
  • Bills for services that the elder didn’t receive or need
  • Duplicate charges and/or bills that have been paid repeatedly
  • Donations that don’t match the elder's priorities or financial means.
  • Excessive trading in brokerage accounts and/or inappropriately risky investments.

African-American Music Appreciation Month is a celebration for African American Music every year in the month of June in America. Black Music Month was originally started in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter, who decreed that June would be the month of black music. It was renamed by President Barack Obama.

Upcoming Events
Now that our fantastically fun Connectors’ Coronation is over, we turn toward the planning of our signature event, the Transforming Lives Luncheon. The task force will host its first meeting in July with the express purpose of determining our honorees for the MonarchCare Community Service Awards and the Bill Kling Service to Veteran’s Award. The luncheon will be held in October. Please let us know if you are interested in serving on the task force or if you have a suggestion for an honoree by contacting Knyvett Lee.
