August 2016 Newsletter
August is known for its heat, and in Florida we have had more than our fair share, but nothing to compare to the heat from the media professional guardians have had the last few years! Last month the FSGA annual conference was held in Fort Lauderdale. Hundreds of professional guardians and supporters of guardianship attended to learn cutting edge information key to serving our clients. Despite the negative news about guardianship, we are a small community of dedicated and caring professional trying hard to meet a huge and escalating need. Now more than ever, we need your support, whether it is volunteering your time or donating your dollars. Show the vulnerable population of South Florida that you care about the Profession of Guardianship.

How We Help
alt textThe Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act, enacted by Congress in December 2014, and signed into Florida law by Governor Rick Scott on May 21, 2015 is finally here! The ABLE Act authorizes persons with disabilities to create tax-free savings accounts that are not counted as assets when applying for public benefits (like Medicaid and SSI) and is modeled on the IRS 529 College Savings plan. The individual must have a "qualifying disability with onset prior to age 26." Individuals can save up to $14,000 per year of his or her income and anyone may contribution to an ABLE account, including family and friends. The account is managed by the same Florida agency that maintains the Florida Prepaid College Fund and offers seven investments. Funds in an ABLE account (up to $100,000) are excluded as a “countable resource” when determining Medicaid eligibility. Account beneficiaries can use the account to pay for "Qualified Disability Expenses", which include:
  • Healthcare
  • Education
  • Housing
  • Transportation
  • Legal Fees
  • Employment Training and Support
  • Assistive Technology and Personal Support Services
ABLE accounts became available on July 1st and all fees are waived until July 1, 2017 (when the fees will be less than $30 per year.) Accounts can be opened online by the beneficiary or his or her designee. If you have more questions, just give us a call.

Did You Know?

August is known for its Dog Days for more reasons than the heat. The 26th is National Dog Day, but did you know that August is also National Catfish month?  According to the American Heart Association, owning a dog may protect you from heart disease, because a dog gives people more reasons to take walks…and most owners bond so closely with their dogs that their reactions to stress are muted and their heart rates slower.

On the other hand, petting your cat can lower blood pressure; it also helps release a relaxation hormone and cuts down on levels of a stress hormone. Whatever your pet preference is, pets give social support to their owners, provide purpose and encourage healthy behaviors.

Upcoming Events
We are gearing up for the 11th Transforming Lives Luncheon this fall. It takes 3 months for our Luncheon Task Force to define, publicize and coordinate this annual event and we have a great time doing it. If you are interested in joining us this year, our first meeting is 8/25 from 4 – 5:30 pm here at MonarchCare. We always start with a happy half-hour of networking, so bring your business cards!
