August 2013 Newsletter
During these “Dog Days” of Summer, we do whatever we can to keep cool and comfortable, especially in South Florida. Seniors are extremely vulnerable to excess heat despite the common complaint that “it’s too cold, so it is especially important during the heat of summer to stay hydrated. If a senior is experiencing thirst, you can bet they are already dehydrated. For those of us who work with seniors we need to encourage them to drink 4-8 glasses of water a day.

Things are also heating up at MonarchCare as we prepare for our Connectors’ Coronation Event in September. Read on to see how you can support this great event!

How We Help
Over half of MonarchCare’s clients are seniors so as we observe National Senior Citizens’ Day (8/21) we celebrate all the gifts seniors have given to others. The observance of this day was established in honor of senior citizens in the US who made positive contributions in their communities. The day was also created to bring awareness of social, health, and economic issues that affect senior citizens.

Part of what we do every day is work to help create a better life for those seniors in need. This month we celebrate eight of our older clients and the contributions they made during their lives!
      • Conrad – Hotel Manager
      • Margaret – School Teacher
      • Joan and Ruth – Nurses
      • Elena – Pastor’s wife
      • Michel – Chemical Engineer
      • Edith – Public Health
      • Betty – Author and dolphin trainer
MonarchCare now serves these great contributors in return for all their years of community service. We encourage you to take the time to learn about the seniors in your circle of contacts and clients.
How You Can Help
Want to get to know who keeps us going? Our wonderful volunteers! We want you to meet some of the fantastic ladies who help us in the office. Marta comes to us through the AARP work program and works three days a week in our office doing a variety of duties. Marta told us she has never worked in an office before. Most of her life she worked as a seamstress and now she also makes jewelry. Marta was our Volunteer of the Month in July for her helpful disposition.

Then there is Simone, who learned about MonarchCare through Volunteer Broward’s website and is planning to attend medical school. Simone will be leaving us soon when she returns to school; we will miss her and wish her well.

If you know someone who would be a good volunteer for our office please give them our number or contact Clevine@MonarchCare.org.
Did You Know?
The “dog days” of summer refers to the period between early July and early September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere. The ancient Romans noticed that the hottest days of the year, i.e. in late July and early August, coincided with the appearance of Sirius, the Dog Star, in the same part of the sky as the Sun. Sirius is the largest and brightest star in the Canis Major constellation; in fact it is the brightest star in the sky.
Upcoming Event
